Eastern Shores of Mary’s Land, Dorchester County

This is the worst of news. Today a letter arrived from Sir. It’s very hard to read. Sir’s writing hand is terrible and he spells very poorly. I did my best to read it to Mistress but she was too weak to hear what it says. The letter reads that Sir is finally coming here in four weeks to see about Mistress. He says he is going to fetch us home! This letter was written seven days ago. That means Sir will be here in three weeks’ time. My insides turned weak like reeds in the wind. My legs did not hold me. Everything inside of me was like an earthquake. I lay down on my pallet. I wrapped in my quilt. I kept telling myself I cannot go back with Sir. I closed my eyes and heard the little song inside of me. And I decided: I will not go back with Sir. I will do as the wind tells me. I will go home. But I will go north to freedom.
